In south-eastern Mallorca there is a unique protected natural landscape of dunes, with untouched wetlands and one of the most beautiful beaches on the island: the Es Trenc Nature Reserve. Already in the 4th century BC, Phoenicians and Romans located ideal waters in this natural environment to extract valuable sea salt.
Like many generations before us, we also use the unique environment of the Salinas d’Es Trenc to extract Mallorca’s white gold. Just a few kilometres from the coast, our salt flats still offer the ideal conditions for the production of the highest quality salts: a gentle sea breeze, plenty of sunshine, low humidity and crystal-clear, pure sea water.
Inspired by the natural beauty of our surroundings and the excellent quality of our products, we work every day of the year to preserve the values of Salinas d’Es Trenc. In 2003 we were the first company to harvest Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc on the Balearic Islands. This innovative project, based on the principles of the use of natural resources, great respect for nature and the conservation of fauna and flora, was born thanks to the salt extraction that began in the 1950s.
All these values are combined in a salt of exceptional character and quality. They are the same ones that are still associated with our products today.
Harvested responsibly, by hand and at all times with respect for natural conditions, the salt flower has since then not only been the heart of our product portfolio, but also the symbol and guiding principle of our business activities.
It is precisely because the island’s unspoilt nature makes such a central contribution to the quality of our organic spice salts that we, as a traditional Mallorcan company, are fully committed to protecting our environment. That’s why for years we have been working with the Balearic Islands’ most important environmental and bird protection association, Grup Balear d’Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa.
Nature conservation and sustainability are central values of our daily work. Our aim is to continue to produce the best salt without compromising CO2 emissions, to continue the plan of continuous improvement in the production of packaging, minimising waste and giving preference to recycling, to continue the favourable policy of conscious water consumption with the smallest possible ecologic footprint, and to continue to give priority to the fundamental effects of our actions on the environment.
In the crystallization of our salts, there is no industrial process involving the heating of water with electricity, fuel or other technologies that could harm the environment, and we always take into account the effective and conscious use of transport to and from the island of raw materials and finished products.
In purchasing and production, we increasingly rely on packaging made of materials that originate from an efficient and responsible production process. We facilitate the reuse of packaging for our products, which can have an unlimited life span in various applications. As part of this policy of recovery and recycling, we work with experts who help us to achieve continuous improvement. One of our objectives is to further reduce the use of plastics in our packaging and throughout the production chain.
Our products from Salinas d’Es Trenc do not contain any artificial additives, flavours, colourings or preservatives. One of our goals is to provide transparent and easily understandable information. All the ingredients used in the manufacture of our products are of natural origin, 100% organic and have quality and organic certification.
Our values as a company in the agricultural and food sector are based on respect for the environment, for the future of the environment and for our own future. Working conditions are regulated by ensuring safety, health and excellence in the performance of the various trades and tasks of all work teams. The entire production chain, from the beginning with the harvest to the end, is made up of highly qualified professionals, traditional craftsmanship and a methodology of maximum efficiency in the best sense.
The salt flats of Es Trenc are located in the southeast of the island of Mallorca, in the centre of the western Mediterranean basin. The climate is very temperate in winter, the action of the sea and the remoteness from the continent are essential characteristics in order to provide an optimal habitat for flora and fauna. Far from the industrial areas, the salt flats are part of the Es Trenc-Salobrar de Campos Maritime-Terrestrial Natural Park, with a coastline of almost six kilometres of unspoilt beach. The conditions for the production of high-quality, natural sea salt could hardly be better.
The area around our seawater catchment is characterised by an exceptionally rich marine flora. In particular, the presence of oceanic Posidonia is an indicator of the excellent quality of the sea water there. A positive side effect of sea grass meadows is their ability to oxygenate the surrounding seawater and preserve marine organisms.
The salt flats are not located directly on the coast, so that the seawater passes through an almost three-kilometre-long channel on its way into the basins. The distance travelled serves as a natural cleaning process. As soon as the water reaches the highest point of the salt flats, it begins its journey through the various basins, where the sun and wind evaporate it naturally.
